| The O'Connell
Avenue Fire Station |
The
Savage Fire Department has two stations:
Station 6.0 - Quentin Avenue Station located at 12305 Quentin Avenue South
Station 6.1 - OConnell Road Station located at 14321 O'Connell Road
The
Quentin Avenue Station 6.0 was built in 1965 and was the home to city
hall, police and fire at that time. The station has 10,000 square
feet and houses the following equipment: two engines, one rescue/equipment truck, and one boat. The future use of this facility
will need to be addressed in the future regarding man power, condition of
the building and future land acquisitions.
The
O'Connell Road Station 6.1 houses the following equipment:
one engine, one water supply truck, one grass fire unit, one command
vehicle, and one 95 foot ladder truck.

2006 Equipment Replacement
The
Department researched and acquired a new engine, which was added
to the fleet in 2006.
The Fire Department started a replacement program many years ago to help
make the budget and replacement process a smooth transition. That
process is:
- Ladder trucks are to be replaced every thirty years with a
refurbishment at fifteen years at 50% of the cost.
- Engines and large trucks should be able to go twenty years with a
refurbishment at ten years at 50% of the original purchase price.
- Light duty trucks (grass rigs, chiefs vehicles, etc.) to be replaced
at the ten year mark.
Fire trucks are extremely expensive. Your firefighters do
everything possible to make them last. You cannot purchase a fire
truck like you do a standard vehicle. Companies cannot afford to
build them and have them sitting on a show floor. The Savage Fire
Department tries to avoid fleet creeping, but we also need to try to
project seven to ten years ahead to be prepared. As the community
grows, so does our department and the community's expectations.
