Public Education
The
Savage Fire Department strives to promote fire safety with the children of our community.
The department averages 3 to 4 tours a month of its fire stations (Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Daycare,
etc.). Firefighters also visit many classrooms during Fire Prevention Month
(October) at the following schools: Hidden Valley Elementary, M W Savage Elementary and
Harriet Bishop Elementary Grades K-3. Firefighters donate about 120 hours each year
to teach the children about:
The 9-1-1 System, Learn Not to Burn Program, Stay Low in Smoke
Situations, The E.D.I.T.H (exit drill in the home) Drill,
Stop, Drop and Roll, and Firefighters are our Friends.
National Night Out
The
Savage Fire Department also participates in National Night Out (the first Tuesday in August)
when each piece of equipment is disbursed in different neighborhoods and firefighters answer
questions residents may have regarding the fire service in our community.
Halloween Party
The
Savage Fire Department plans an annual Halloween party for the community. This is a safe
environment in which young children, ages newborn to 12 years, may visit the firefighters, play
games and be able to leave with some candy, prizes and most of all, a smile on their face.
Dan Patch Days
Savage
is one of the few departments that also gets the community involved and allows residents to actually put
on the fire gear and participate in their own water fights. Comments most frequently heard following
the water fights are: Wow, is that gear hot.; The gear you wear is extremely heavy.; This is a lot harder than it looks.;
and of course the winners of the competition always say Wow, was that ever fun. You will do it again next year, right?

Fund Raisers
The
Savage Fire Department has three fund-raisers each year:
Pancake Breakfast
Held in conjunction with Dan Patch Days, this is held for the general public and has
been very successful. Approximately 600 people attend this event.
Cadillac Dinner
For this dinner the department sells $100 dinner-for-two tickets. These tickets are most commonly
purchased by business owners. There is a steak dinner and cash drawings held.
Calendar
This fund-raiser was started in 1999. A committee was formed to sell advertising on a calendar which was then hand-delivered by the firefighters to
the residents in Savage.
It
should also be noted that the Fire Department receives many non-monetary donations
from local businesses.
