To help reduce speed in the community and educate and provide information to the public the police department acquired a speed SMART trailer. The speed SMART trailer is a portable, self-contained speed display unit that is towed to sites experiencing speed-related problems.

The SMART Trailer
The "SMART" trailer is a tool used by the Savage Police Dept. in the Speed Reduction program.

Results

Motorists will see their speeds displayed on a highly visible LED display. A speed limit sign above the display reminds motorists to pay attention and ease up on the gas pedal. The trailer is also capable of informing violators by offering the motorist a Violator Alert notice. The amber LEDs flash red when a speeder exceeds a preprogrammed speed, sending a This means YOU message across the screen.

A traffic statistics computer provides 15-minute tallies of traffic counts and speeds, and an analysis by percentile speed categories in 5-mph or 1-mph groups, for speed surveys. After the data is collected an operator may display or print graphs, print a hard copy of the data, or download the files to another computer. The data includes vehicle count and average speed in 15 minute intervals; total vehicle count; minimum, maximum and average speeds; 50th and 85th percentiles; ten mile pace; and the number of vehicles recorded for each mile per hour recorded. The computer will plot either a bar or line graph with the number the vehicles vs. time of day, vehicle speed vs. time of day, and vehicle speed vs. number of vehicles.

Information gathered by the trailer can be used to determine areas within the city for high traffic enforcement or in determining need for enforcement.

If a resident would like to have the speed trailer parked in their neighborhood to monitor traffic, please contact the Savage Police Department at 952.882.2600.
