The primary task of the Building Department is to ensure that new construction and remodeling of buildings within the City meets minimum standards as regulated by the International Building Code and International Residential Code, the International Mechanical Code, the International Fuel Gas Code and the Minnesota Plumbing Code. The City of Savage follows the 2015 Minnesota Residential Code which has adopted, with amendments, the 2012 International Residential Code (IRC). These codes ensure that buildings are safe and pose no risk to the public's welfare. The department works with homeowners and contractors to ensure that residential homes and commercial buildings meet the required safety guidelines.
Tasks carried out by the Building Inspections Division include answering applicant questions, reviewing project plans, processing and issuing building permits, coordinating with other City departments on projects and providing inspections.
The City offers handouts for many common building projects to help explain the procedure for obtaining a permit and the required inspection process. The City of Savage inspects all aspects of these projects with the exception of electrical work. Electrical permits and inspections are done by the State of Minnesota.
