The Savage Police Department has partnered with the Scott County Sheriff’s Office to offer a Police Explorer Program designed for young individuals to explore a career in law enforcement or a related field in the criminal justice system.
Program Overview
The Explorer Program is a volunteer youth program designed for motivated and service-orientated young men and women who have an interest in the law enforcement field. Post members provide helpful services to the Savage Police Department and to the community. Post members learn valuable skills not only in police work, but in maturity, leadership, and teamwork.
Requirements
Candidates should be of good character and trustworthy, as determined by an explorer advisor), and have a willingness to participate in social and civil functions. Candidates cannot have been involved in any previous serious delinquent social or criminal behavior, as determined by explorer advisors who will conduct a basic background check.
Background requirements:
- Scott County resident
- School Report Card (2.0 GPA or higher)
- School attendance (check for significant amounts of absentee and tardiness)
- Criminal background / driving record
- Disclosure of Police Contacts
- Employer check (if applicable)
- Three Reference Checks
General requirements:
- Attend regular meetings and other trainings with reasonable notice of absence unless an emergency exists
- Be able to interact well with others in working as a team and with the general public.
- Have an interest in law enforcement or a related field.
- Compete in State and Regional competitions.
Candidates must submit an application and complete an oral interview.

Schedule
- Bi-weekly Sunday evenings, 3-5 p.m.
- Numerous volunteer options throughout the year that assist the police department (optional).
Interested?
We typically recruit and add new positions in the fall of each year and build on skills as the year progresses. However, in 2023, we are keeping our application process open until all positions are filled. Explorers is a great college and job resume building teaching a multitude of applicable skills.
