Installing a car seat for an infant or toddler is a daunting task for first-time and experienced parents. While most car seats come with instructions for installation, it is reassuring to have someone experienced in car seat installations available to make sure the seat is installed correctly. 

Savage Police and Fire Departments offer FREE car seat inspections to Savage residents for car seats of all sizes.

Appointments 

Car seat inspections are by appointment only. To schedule an appointment, please complete the form below to request an install date with one of the departments state-certified car seat technicians.

Car seat inspections take approximately 30 minutes per car seat. Please bring:

• Car seat(s) and/or booster(s)
• Child safety restraint device manual
• Your vehicle(s) and vehicle manual

Car seats more than six years old should be replaced; technicians will not install them.

Please print and complete the Child Passenger Safety Education Release, Waiver of Claim, and Indemnification Agreement and bring with you to your scheduled inspection.

Savage Fire hosts an American Heart Association (AHA) Heartsaver First Aid-CPR-AED class designed for anyone with little to no medical training who needs a course completion card, regulatory (e.i. OSHA) and other requirements, or for anyone who wants to be prepared for an emergency in any setting.

The American Heart Association’s (AHA) Heartsaver First Aid-CPR-AED course trains participants to provide first aid, CPR, and use an automated external defibrillator (AED) in a safe, timely, and effective manner. Reflects science and education from the American Heart Association Guidelines Update for CPR and Emergency Cardiovascular Care (ECC).

If you would like to schedule a group or participate as an individual in a CPR/First Aid Class, please complete the CPR/First Aid Class Interest Form. Fire Department staff will contact you to coordinate class availability.

Are you considering letting your child stay home alone before or after school? This full-day session is hosted by Savage Fire and Police and is designed to prepare kids ages 8 – 12 for this new responsibility. 

Educational topics include:

• Getting organized and setting ground rules
• Getting organized for morning alone time
• Getting home safely after school
• How to be safe at home
• What to do when someone calls/comes to the door
• How to call 911 in case of an emergency
• Basic first aid and choking skills
• Fire safety, escape plans & severe weather safety
• Having fun alone and keeping busy
• Handling sibling arguments
• Kitchen safety and healthy snacks

Do you have a surveillance camera at your residence or business? If so, Savage Police would like to partner with you to keep your neighborhood safe. Security cameras can be a great tool when solving crimes. But police are not always aware who has surveillance cameras and potentially vital information to help solve a crime.

With SafeCam, Savage Police are asking residents and businesses to voluntarily register their private video surveillance systems with the department and allow officers to contact them should a crime occur in or near where the camera is installed. The SafeCam program is 100% voluntary and does NOT provide Savage Police with access to security camera systems that are privately owned by participants. Questions? The Savage Police Department offers a safe exchange zone, called Safe Spot, where residents can exchange items that they have purchased/sold online. This allows people to have a public location to make legal transactions. The Safe Spot is located at the Savage Police Department, 6000 McColl Drive, near the short term parking. It is identified with a Safe Spot sign and is under camera surveillance 24-hours a day, seven days a week. People do not need to ask for permission to use the area.

Safe Spot can be used for various transactions, including child custody exchanges, online transactions, and retrieving property from family members or acquaintances

Other safety tips:

• Tell a friend or family member where you are going and when you plan to be back.
• If possible, have someone go with you
• Take your cell phone with you and make sure it's on
• Always trust your instincts

The Traffic Safety Committee reviews and makes recommendations on traffic issues affecting the City of Savage. Issues discussed include requests for improvements from the community, City staff and City Council. The Committee is made up of representatives from the City's Police, Public Works, and Planning Departments. The Committee meets monthly as needed to review requests that have been submitted.
